I Did It Anyway

July 4, 2014

How often do you find yourself doing something you just told yourself not to do? It could be something people see, maybe an addiction you are battling. It could be as simple as an attitude toward someone – maybe that co-worker that gets under your skin, or a family member. Does it lead to a pattern you just can’t break? May I suggest that you, in your own strength, may never be able to conquer this problem?

I know, telling people they can’t do something sounds demeaning. I didn’t say you couldn’t do it, however. I said you couldn’t in your own strength. When there’s something that continually seems to bring you down, to defeat you, I know of only one hope. His name is Jesus! I’ve been reading Romans 7 and 8 and it really hit home for me. I can have the absolute best intentions when I get up, but when I’m faced with that situation that I’m struggling with, I find at times I just can’t keep from falling flat on my face. I know better, but I do it anyway. That’s the beautiful thing I’m learning about God. He knows this, and yet He still loves me.

Romans 7:21 I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22 I love God’s law with all my heart. 23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin. (NLT)

We may have the desire to do good, but there will be times we will fail. We cannot do it on our own. Romans 8 goes on to say that nothing can separate us from our God. I spent a good portion of my life believing I was separated from God. The fact is, He was there the whole time, I was just foolish enough to keep my back to Him. You may feel like you have ‘fallen away’ from God yourself. Please know, He’s just a turn away from you. Just turn around and let Him know you’re ready to try again! There will still be struggles, but in His strength, you can be a conqueror!
