Affirmation of Love

August 12, 2014

We all want to be loved by someone. Some more than others, and by that, I mean some need to feel loved by everyone. Some seem content being loved by only one, but we all still want to be loved none the same.

We often try and earn the love of others. The fact is, if you never show someone else how you love them, you’ll be hard pressed to earn their love for you. You may love your children no matter what, but when they show you their love you’re more likely to pick up that little surprise gift on the way home from work the next day. Sometimes it doesn’t matter what you do to try and impress someone. They simply won’t notice you, or won’t care about you.

When I think of the baptismal of Jesus, I am struck by the statement the Father makes from Heaven above. “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” This was before Jesus performed His first miracle. He didn’t have to earn His Father’s love. I honestly believe the affirmation He received from the Father at this point allowed Him to survive the temptations of Satan after fasting in the wilderness for forty days. I also believed it was perhaps a springboard to help to remind Him He could perform all of those miracles. I don’t pretend to understand the God part of Jesus, who obviously could do anything He wanted. I do, however, think I understand the human part of Him, which, just like us, was encouraged to know He was loved.

May I now suggest to you that you too are loved by your Heavenly Father? He loves you in spite of you. 2 Timothy 1:9 says He has saved us and called us to a holy life, not because of anything we have done… That is God giving you that same affirmation He gave Jesus. Now let that empower you to live out your calling in Him. It’s a gift that is yours to take, but if you never take it, you’ll never see all the great things God can do in you and through you.

We all want to be loved, and we all are loved. Once you understand you are loved by the only One who really matters you can live in the joy and peace He has promised to put inside of you. I will promise others will think you’ve lost your mind, but that will bother you less and less the more time you spend with the One who loves you most!

Live out of that love that you did not earn. You can’t earn it, it’s a gift! Take it and pass it on!
